What are Dentures?

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are artificial tooth replacements worn by those who have lost their natural teeth through injury or illness. They are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. There are many different types of dentures, designed to address a variety of issues. Dentures may be removable or dental implant-supported, full or partial. They can be either full or partial, meaning they can either replace all teeth on either the top or bottom gum line or just a few that are missing.

Full Dentures

If you have lost, or are losing, all of your teeth, complete or full dentures might be the solution for you. A full denture is removable and fits in your mouth along either your top or bottom gum line to replace all of the missing teeth. They are held in place by suction and/or the help of an oral adhesive. Full dentures are formed to fit your mouth naturally, and they are fitted with artificial teeth that best represent your natural teeth.

Partial Dentures

Unlike full dentures which are used when all teeth are missing, partial dentures are used when some natural teeth still remain. A partial denture provides a natural-looking tooth replacement option, while also helping to maintain the natural spacing and alignment of your natural teeth, as well as your jaw and facial muscles. Partial dentures are often used instead of other tooth-replacement methods when the surrounding natural teeth are not strong enough to support structures such as dental bridges, or when more than one or two teeth are missing.

Why Wear Dentures?

  • Improve the appearance of a smile that has multiple missing teeth
  • Keep the structure of the mouth sound by supporting the structures around the cheeks and lips
  • Make it possible to eat foods that require chewing, making it possible to keep your diet the same and ensure that you are properly nourished.
  • A viable solution to replace teeth that are causing serious pain and oral health issues

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are held in place by dental implants placed in your jawbone. They look and function like regular teeth, and can actually feel stronger and more stable, helping you maintain your jawbone over time. A dental implant is a permanent fixture that is anchored to the jawbone and can be used to replace any number of teeth.
