What is an Inlay and Onlay?
Inlays and onlays are used to strengthen teeth affected by cavities and tooth decay. They can also repair teeth that do not have enough damage to apply a crown. They are a form of indirect restoration, which means that they are made outside of the mouth as a single, solid piece that fits the specific size and shape of the cavity, and then is cemented in place in the tooth.
The inlay is used when the cavity is too large for a simple filling. It is a single, solid piece placed over the filling area. The onlay is more than an inlay, but not quite a crown. It covers the cusp of the tooth (while the inlay only fills the areas between the cusps), and like the inlay, is fabricated as a single solid piece.
